it’s half past midnight on new year’s day
i’m driving down beltway 8
surrounded by fog and fireworks
blaring from every which way.
i smile to myself, grateful for the day.
then down comes the rain
although heavy, it doesn’t stay.
i smile to myself again, grateful for the rain.
as i continue down the beltway,
i notice a shift in the atmosphere
i’m met with the silence of the night
but just for a brief moment.
the new year’s day parade
continues to my right with a glorious gold flare
then it fades. still, i smile to myself.
grateful for its shimmering light.
for the remainder of my drive home
i’m left observing all that remains…
a bright, waning gibbous moon
continues to shine ever so bright
and the clouds have now shifted away
leaving more room for the glorious moonlight
i smile to myself, admiring its eternal shine.
